I thought I had the Christian life pretty well tied up with a pretty bow until I hit some of the NOW WHAT and THEN WHAT walls (caps on purpose...i.e., yelling!). That's when I discovered it really was okay to ask God questions ("How long, O Lord?" is right outta the psalms) and lament. Whoever taught me the song that says "I'm inright, outright, upright, downright happy all the time" surely meant well but did me no favor theologically! "Help me!" and "Save me! and "Lord, have mercy; Christ, have mercy" got left out of the ACTS prayer formula, but I think we need to add them if we're going to be real. I love how the NT records "Lord, where else shall we go? Only you have the words of life." They had Jesus present with them and they still scratched their heads asking, "Is this really life in God as it's supposed to be?"

Don't you think we need a whole lot more humility in our interpersonal relationships? We need words like Help me! Save me! Have mercy! Grant me wisdom!  Sometimes we need  fewer words or to sit in silence; sometimes we need to speak up more with bold courage. Sometimes we need to cry instead of offering answers...
