Keeping first things first!

Last evening we enjoyed dinner with a group of former young marrieds from a class convened in the early 1980s. In those days one key aim for the class was the development among the couples of authentic and lasting friendships.  The evening provided a glimpse into God's blessing of that intention and the value of it.

Most of the couples have scattered around the country.  Each of them has faced personal challenges and difficulties.  One continues to care for a severly disabled child with love and perseverance. One faces employment challenges currently.   Nevertheless, as we shared updates on children and grandchildren around a delicious meal, the conversation was filled with laughter, teasing, remembering and praise.  We were a rowdy bunch that brought a smile to those serving us the delicious pastas.

God was in the midst of our conversations.  Weary hearts were encouraged and friendships were renewed.  I was reminded of the truth that only two things last forever.  People and the word of God.  Put the two together and you have a receipe for true community. Investing in both makes life worth living.

Somehow in our too busy worlds these two things tend to get squeezed out.  Last night reminded me to keep them uppermost in my calendar.
