Read Numbers 6:1-21 and you'll discover the requirements of a Nazirite vow.

What draws me to this vow is that it's a completely voluntary form of worship that incorporates both the mind and the body in an act of worship. Samson, in Judges 13, was decreed by the angel of the Lord to be a Nazirite from birth, but for the rest of Israel, this vow was a way of showing special devotion for a particular period of time.

The three major attributes of a Nazirite vow are:

1 - don't eat or drink anything that comes from the vine;

Hello readers! I’m new to Tapestry and quite honored to join such a thinking, articulate group. I look forward to exploring the wonder of our God and the richness of what he is up to with other women of influence who are running hard after Jesus.

A friend who saw the summer hit movie Julie and Julia just posted on her blog: “Does it have deep and significant eternal implication? I don’t believe so. Was it entertaining and a sneak peek into the inner sanctum of the writer’s life? Absolutely!”

Awe or Apathy

Recently visiting Europe and it’s many churches I was reminded again of the sober reality that God has no grandchildren.  Richly beautiful cathedrals now attract crowds of admiring tourists rather than crowds of humble worshippers.  Walking among the tourists, admiring the powerful art displaying biblical themes, my heart grieved for the lost awe of and growing apathy for God so prevalent in our 21st century culture.

Well, I was going to write you guys an excellent post today, but then I threw a superbowl party instead (but didn't watch the superbowl), and read the Similitudes of Enoch (which I don't suggest for light reading), and helped Jacob with his science project (which is an awesome collection of seashells sorted by color with accompanying graphs and charts, BTW, and I'm way more excited about it than he is!).

I’m going to tell you something not too many people know: I have danced at church. In fact, I have danced at a few churches. You see, I am a dancer—trained in ballet for most of my life—but only those who have seen one of my few praise dance opportunities have seen me dance liturgically. Many of my friends have not. As we are all aware (dancers especially), dancing is a sticky subject amongst the people of God.

Bridge Jumping and Sinatra: Does Experience Elevate Communication?

I've been ruminating on an op-ed piece that Bono wrote for the New York Times recently. After getting over the fact that the man seems to know no bounds of influence (and I admire his tenacity), I was particularly struck by a thesis in his article. The foundation of Bono's piece is the duality of celebrating this New Year, which he likens to two Sinatra renditions of "My Way"; one brash and cocky, the other regretful and introspective.

Oh, Come Let Us Adore Him

I love Christmas, because the Incarnation of Christ boggles my mind. That the second Person of the Trinity would choose to live as we live, be tempted and tried as we are, and love and delight in us, as flawed and base as we are...astounds me.

Throughout the United States, evangelical Christians attend churches week after week in order to hear preaching, participate in music, and to experience God. Often, people refer to Sunday services as “worship” service. Even more commonly, congregants refer to the musical portion of their service as “worship.”

My husband is a big Tom Waits fan. Tom's voice is unique; knarled and gravelly, true, raw, spinning elaborate and oblique musical tales.
