An Underused Argument for the Resurrection

Tagged:  •    •    •    •

Whatever you think of the logic of Gamaliel's argument as described in Acts 5 (leave the disciples alone and if the movement is not of God it will go away--but that sure hasn't worked for Islam!), it's interesting to apply it to first-century rabble rousers.

Radical Apocalyptic Jesus

Go to your local Barnes and Noble or Borders or any bookshop of fine taste and you will find a section on Jesus, and the books about Jesus make one subtle or not-so-subtle promise: the book will reveal who the real Jesus was and what the real Jesus was like. These books belong to what scholars call the “quest for the historical Jesus,” and most know that this Jesus is not the Jesus Christ of Christian faith but someone less, someone more human, someone far more Jewish, and someone many like to shove in the face of orthodox Christians who believe Jesus was Son of God.

Tomorrow Christian churches all over the world will celebrate Palm Sunday, commemorating Jesus' entrance into Jerusalem five days before his death, riding on a donkey and surrounded by throngs of well-wishers acclaiming his arrival like that of a king.  The event has come to be known as Jesus' triumphal entry.  But does it deserve that label?

Martin Hengel of Tübingen and the Resurrection

Martin Hengel's new historical Jesus book, Jesus und das Judentum, concludes with a discussion of the witnesses to the resurrection (He wrote the work with his longtime colleague, Anna Maria Schwemer). This chapter and discussion comes at the end of a book where Hengel is stressing the self-conscious messianic nature of Jesus' ministry and actions. He begins his final content chapter with a careful walk through 1 Cor 15:3-8. He sees this confession Paul passed on as coming from the Jerusalem community, pointing to the eyewitness roots of the tradition.
