What's in a name? The 'Yoseh' inscription in the Jesus family tomb

The Faculty of the University of the Holy Land comment again on the Jesus Family Tomb issue. This time in particular they make some interesting observations on the frequency of the use of the familiar name Yoseh (YWSH) as compared with the more formal form, Yehosef (YHWSF). The posting is interesting, but the post’s title is a real groaner of a pun! (If you don't get it, let me know in the comments to this post.)

There is a very interesting essay In the latest issue of the Journal for the Study of the Historical Jesus by John H. Elliott, "Jesus the Israelite Was Neither a 'Jew' nor a 'Christian': On Correcting Misleading Nomenclature." This is the abstract of the essay:

Jesus tomb: Handwriting style on the ossuary

Tagged:  •

The faculty of the University of Holy Land Studies have recently posted two blogs commenting on the handwriting style of the ossuary inscription here and here. Note also the humorous cartoon in the most recent one. It is good sometimes to find a little humour in these debates!

April DeConick of Rice University also reports on the Jerusalem Conference and her reaction to the Duke Conference.

Here is her report from January 22:

Some have asked my opinion of the Duke letter that is now circulating with signatures from several scholars who attended the Talpiot conference. Mark Goodacre has posted it on his blog. (DLB note: it is now on the Duke site which is where our link has it)

An Under-40 Look at Jesus

Tagged:  •    •    •    •
The title of this post is meant to be a very practical way for me to introduce myself. As far as I know, I am the youngest member of this blogging team, and yes, I am under the age of 40. I'll even tell you that as of this writing I am a sprightly 37 years old. My station in life fits this age: I currently teach New Testament Studies at Dallas Theological Seminary as an assistant professor (read: still seeking tenure), and like many people my age I am married and in the midst of raising some wonderful children.

The Final Report on the Princeton Symposium Concerning the Jesus Tomb Jan 25 08

Tagged:
The final report on the Princeton Symposium has now been released. In it the organizers summarize the meeting and protest the media's early reporting on the event. As our own posts have suggested, there is nothing really new that emerged at this meeting and the skepticism over the original claims that Talpiot was Jesus' tomb remains. For the full report, see the News We're Watching (Final Report). This should be the last we hear of this unless something new appears.
