I suppose the first thing to say is that Christians have been in charge. Jimmy Carter, Bush I and II, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton were professing Christians. The degree to which they practiced their beliefs has been debated. Each brought his own kind of change to the world, but it must be admitted that not much of it has stuck. Even if each of them were devout , living an exemplary personal life, it can be argued from this that a private spirituality is not capable of changing the world. For justice, peace and love to reign it would require systemic change. Many would rather put their money on Bill and Melinda Gates foundation that addresses cultural problems in needy countries. Bono's Red Campaign which addresses AIDs, Bill Clinton has raised a billion dollars to address world wide hunger and disease. All of these efforts are worthy of our support and prayers, but if at the same time we do not address the need for personal change, such efforts will be nothing more than an overlay. In fact to think that real change is primarily systemic is the illusion of our age. We can't continue to live like we have since Adam, something more fundamental must be done. Public policy does not eliminate greed, resentment, disappointment, fear of sickness, pain, old age or hatred of others. At the same time, conversion as we have practiced it as a vapid mass produced experience, " Say the right words and you will be saved." This kind of salvation leaves the heart of darkness untouched. There are those who do not see personal virtue as an answer to social ills. The effect of this belief is to keep people working at social change without attempting the radical transformation of character. The only true radical is one who proposes a different character and life for human beings. The only true hope for dealing with the world's problems is the person and gospel of Jesus Christ. He lives now, he is our leader, we follow him and are formed into a new humanity. If you don't believe this, just stay home, there is no need to leave home to tell people anything else.
