A perfect view of how God uses the Gospel to change the heart is found in II Samuel 12, the account of Nathan and David. God sent Nathan with the Word of God to confront, expose, reprimand David's sin. The supernatural effect of the Word was repentance. It is a repentance that recognizes the full weight of our offense to God! David was moved by the Word of God to repentance! In gracious return, God removed the sin although the natural consequences of David's actions didn't go away. David's repentance was inward and we get a glimpse of his healing heart in Psalm 51.

"Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me. Surely you desire truth in the inner parts; you teach me wisdom in the inmost place.
Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow. "
