I spent this last week at the University of Michigan, speaking to the staff and students of a church on campus, as well as lecturing on Luke in an Introduction to New Testament class and meeting with faculty and graduate students in their religious studies program. Gabriele Boccaccini was my host for the meetings on campus. He is well known for his work in Second Temple Judaism.

Martin Hengel's new historical Jesus book, Jesus und das Judentum, concludes with a discussion of the witnesses to the resurrection. He begins with a careful walk through 1 Cor 15:3-8. He sees this confession Paul passed on as coming from the Jerusalem community, pointing to the eyewitness roots of the tradition.

The USA: A Christian Nation or A Nation Rooted in Judeo-Christian Values?

Tagged:  •    •

The Episcopal church has posted a fascinating commentary by Richard Hughes giving conservative Christians a hard time for claiming that our nation was founded as a Christian nation. Clarity on this point IS important. Our Constitution does endorse religious freedom, separation of church and state, and does not provide for a state religion.

Martin Hengel and Anna Maria Schwemer have published a new work on Jesus in German, Jesus und das Judentum (Mohr/Siebeck is the publisher in the WUNT series). Hengel is professor emeritus at the University of Tübingen in Germany. Schwemer has been his research assiatant for years. I am reading it right now. It is a solid look at Jesus in the Second Temple Jewish context.

Full Review The Jesus Legend, by Paul Eddy and Greg Boyd Nov 25

This is the first of several reviews on parts of The Jesus Legend, by Paul Eddy and Greg Boyd. This is an examination  of the trustworthy nature of the Gospels by two evangelicals and they begin by taking a look at epistemological foundations (or how we claim to know what we know).

Often I am reviewing books that challenge faith. This time I am reviewing one that defends it. Lord or Legend?

William Arnal's Symbolic Jesus Nov 13

Tagged:

This book is an attempt to argue that those who criticize the Jesus Seminar and other writers aligned in a similar way (such as Crossan and Mack) for having a non-Jewish Jesus are simply engaged in an effort to deflect the real discussion.

Jesus Puzzle Point 11 The Early Christian Movement Oct 15

Tagged:  •

We come now to point 11 of the Jesus Puzzle.

Here it is:

11) The initial variety of sects and beliefs about a spiritual Christ shows that the movement began as a multiplicity of largely independent and spontaneous developments based on the religious trends and philosophy of the time, not as a response to a single individual.

The Jesus Puzzle Point 10 "Q" Oct 12

Tagged:  •

We now turn to point 10 and the source Q, a source that many NT scholars see as behind the teaching that overlaps between Matthew and Luke, where some 200 and 225 verses in these two gospels run in a similar manner and with the view that these two writers did not use each other.

Jesus Puzzle Gospel Roots Point 8 Oct 2

Now we come to Point 8 of Doherty's work:

8) All The Gospels derive their basic story of Jesus of Nazareth from one source: whoever wrote the Gospel of Mark. The Acts of the Apostles, as an account of the beginnings of the Christian apostolic movement, is a second century piece of myth-making.

Here is point 4 from Doherty:

4) Paul and other early writers place the death and resurrection of their Christ in the supernatural/mythical world, and derive their information about these events, as well as other features of their heavenly Christ, from scripture.

The Jesus Puzzle Pt 3 Paul and the Epistles Sept 18

In many ways we have already discussed point 3 in many of the comments on earlier posts. Here is point 3 stated:

The Debated Josephus Text- Antiquities 18.63-64 Sept 15

Antiquities 18.63-64

Josephus as it stands. I have included the three disputed portions in italics so they can be easily seen. It is clear why these portions are challenged as they are not likely to be things a Jew who was not a Christian would be likely to say. So here is the text:

The Jesus Puzzle, Point 2- The Josephus Citation about Jesus Sept 15

Tagged:  •    •

We come now to the second point of the Jesus Puzzle. It is:

2) There is no non-Christian record of Jesus before the second century. References in Flavius Josephus (end of first century) can be dismissed as later Christian insertions.
