"Leave the impression it has nothing to say or is woefully outdated, and all the modern world has to say on the topic is far more valuable and profound."

Homosexuality is not something new that the modern world has created. It existed in Biblical times and way before that, all over the world. Given that, I think if your mission is to give fair context, it's important to mention that when the Bible says homosexuality is wrong, Jesus didn't mention anything about it. Certainly Jesus knew it existed and if it had been that important, he would've said something. That's not to say he therefore condoned it. It's just not an issue that he, apparently, felt very strongly about, otherwise he would've said something. I think the issue of divorce is more worth discussion, because Jesus actually did talk about it, and it affects more people today. It's really a question of priority, and giving context to that priority in the Bible.
