Key Bible Tools for the Mac: Accordance and Libronix 6/25/09

It has been a while since I discussed Bible tools for the Mac (Sorry PC folks, only Apple is worthy). My tool of choice for years has been Accordance, which is an excellent search resource. I still use it regularly.

Thinking about Iran 06/22/09

I am in Berlin to lecture tonight and tomorrow at a Messianic community here on the gospel. Yesterday I was roaming around Berlin, a fascinating city. I went back to one of my favorite spots, the Kaiser Wilhelm church. It stands in semi-ruins as it was struck by bombs one night during the World War II, The new sanctuary, built to its side, is modest but stunning.

Slavonic Enoch (2 Enoch) Loses an Adjective June 14

The opening of the Enoch Conference on 2 Enoch and various Jewish mediatorial figures opened in Naples today. We heard a lecture on new Coptic manuscript fragments (4 total) of 2 Enoch discovered in Southern Egypt in the 1970's but just now identified. This are the first manuscripts of this book not to be in Slavonic.

To Italy to discuss Enoch, Adam, and Melchizedek

Friday I leave for a two month trip to various locales.

I start at the Enoch Seminar in Naples, Italy (I know, someone has to do it). This group meets every other summer and brings together experts in Second Temple Judaism, Early Christianity and Rabbinics from around the world.

Israel May 24

I am in Israel in Netanya at a meeting of messianic Jewish leaders who are discussing messianic Jewish Israeli identity issues here. They are being introduced to a theological forum and how to have what can be a difficult discussion. I was asked to come and help them set up their meeting. So I have been in consultation with the steering committee helping them to get ready for this event.

Two Terrific Ministries in Jordan May 20

My time in Jordan is almost done. It has been a great time. The students are eager to learn and the issues here are fascinating. I have seen two ministries up close here.

In Jordan May 18

I am having a wonderful time teaching 17 students at the Jordan Theological Seminary in Amman. The people here are so nice. The students are eager to study and learn. It has been interesting teaching Luke in this context. I attended church here with translation. It was great to hear the completely different music that was Arab in style.

Headed to Jordan and Israel May 9

I am headed to Jordan and Israel for the next three weeks. I will try to report on any relevant biblical news I pick up. I know the blogs have been few and far between lately, a combination of getting ready for the summer's travel, finishing a semester on a tight clock, and responding to previous posts.

Rules On Comments May 3 09

We have been wrapping up the semester and news has been slow. So we have not posted new entries for some time. I still am responding every day to comments on previous posts, something that is taking more time because of all the posts that are now up--and the comments that are coming in. However here is a rule all who comment need to be aware of from here on.

Witherington's Review of Ehrman April 10

Just a quick note to point to a fine detailed review of Ehrman's latest by my friend, Ben Witherington. It is at:

Making Sense of the Newsweek Article on the Decline and Fall of American Christianity April 10

Tagged:  •

I was in New York City this week, speaking at Kings College in Manhatten. It was a great time. I also was able to visit some of my media friends there. I was asked constantly about the Newsweek piece this week on the Fall and Decline of Christian America. It reports on a recently released poll showing that those identifying themselves as Christians has declined 10% in the last two decades.

More on the Essenes

The Essenes are one of four groups attested as a Jewish sect by the first century Jewish Historian in Antiquities 18.18-22 (Pharisees, Sadducees, Zealots are the others).

Search for the Historical Essenes

Tagged:  •

Easter approaches and so do stories about our Judeo-Christian roots. Time has a story on an Israeli scholar denying the Essenes existed (of course the other groups noted in Antquities 18 existed and were not legendary as she claims). There are numerous references to such a group and her "renegade sons of Zadok" are very much what the Essenes are described as being.

Ehrman's Newest Entry March 16, 09 (revised April 5)

Bart Ehrman's Jesus, Interrupted by his own admission says nothing new. It packages what scholars have been saying in a very public way for two decades (As Ehrman points out, these issues go back centuries-- and the positions he defends have been advocated for a few centuries. In fact, folks like Augustine and Origen were aware of the kinds of issues he raises).

Headed to Indonesia

Well everyone I am headed to Indonesia to lecture on the Historical Jesus over the next week. It takes 30 hours to get there with connections. I am reading the new Bart Ehrman book which is more of the same. His juxtaposing of devotional reading with historical reading is a kind of straw man contrast (he opens the book here with his repeated biography of his journey from evangelicalism).

IBR Jesus Group Feb 26

This blog will be brief. Day of Discovery is broadcasting a series on the IBR Jesus Group's work on the historical Jesus. This is a decade long project involving several evangelical scholars. We filmed these shows last summer as we were wrapping up our work for publication later this year. It is eight shows, two of which are now up on the net for streaming broadcast.

Note on Comments Feb 19

Just a note to people who are writing comments. If you imbed a site as an advertisement (even in your email or name), your comment is not being posted, period. I have had to delete numerous such posts the past few weeks. I know the economic crisis is bad, but doing PR on this site is not the solution.

Discussion on the Gospel and Its Definition Feb 9

Christianity Today.com has just posted a podcast that is an interview I did on the gospel with Preaching Today. It deals with what the gospel is or is not.

Thanks, Village Church Jan 31

Last night I spoke (for a time) at Village Church in Highland Village, Texas on Jesus's Values and Politics. The way we did it was to speak for a time and then open up for questions and then the plan was to return to the lecture and then do questions. Alas, that did not happen.

India Jan 26

I spent the early part of January in India at a Seminary teaching a DMin class on Luke in 5 days. This group from the Evangelical Seminary in Bangalore was an amazing combination of folks. Some walked through the bush for days to get to a train in order to get to the class which meets for two weeks each year (I was their guest biblical studies prof for this year).

Dallas Jesus Conference on Feb 23 Announcement (Jan 21 expanded Jan 24, 26)

This brief post is to note a conference to be held at DTS and the Center for Christian Leadership. It is on Jesus, Culture and Spiritual Formation. I will address the cultural issues that are obstacles to moving into spiritual formation in the church, obstacles that are especially relevant to the under 30's (there are five in my view). My colleagues will treat how to deal with these issues.

Remaining Issues on Homosexuality Jan 16

Tagged:  •
We now come to the remaining issues in our look at Newsweek’s piece on gay marriage. There are three issues here: (1) claims about an inherent orientation, (2) the legal issue of rights and recognition, and (3) the idea of inclusiveness.

Inherent Orientation

Back from India Jan 9

I am returning from India tomorrow. It has been a great time here. More on that later. For now, I have not had access to the Net with my computer so I have not been able to manage the page in a normal manner. I am sorry the posting of comments has been slow. Also I have not been able to comment. That will all go back to normal next week. So until then, the best to all.

Off to India Jan 3

Gang:

I am off to India for a week of teaching.

Newsweek on Homosexuality Post 4 Jan 2

I want to begin this post by saying first that this is not an easy topic to address. If there is one thing Christianity teaches, it is that we are all sinners and the need for God is universal even for those who do not recognize it.

Happy New Year Jan 1

Happy 2009 to all.

Newsweek and Gay Marriage: The Bible and Marriage Post 3 Dec 26

Tagged:  •    •
I now come to the substance of the Newsweek piece on marriage and the Bible. It treats the first of two key topics the article covers to present the case for gay marriage in our culture. That first topic is how the Bible sees and describes marriage. (The second addresses homosexuality.

Merry Christmas to all and a Happy 2009.

Journalistic Integrity, the Bible, and Marriage in Newsweek's Gay Marriage Piece: A Need To Give Context Post # 2 Dec 16

It is disappointing when a cover article in a news magazine becomes an advocacy piece that really does not engage its opposition fairly. That is certainly the case with the Newsweek opening on gay marriage. Lisa Miller begins her “report” with the following selective use of the Bible. She says,
