Off to Israel May 10 .08

I leave for Israel tomorrow for a month, so I am not sure how regular posts will be over the next month until mid-June. Hopefully I can keep up now and again. But posts and responses may be pretty erratic.

The Point of the Manifesto Put Simply May 8. 08

This is similar to a comment I just posted. I rarely do this in two spots, but in this case it is important.

Evangelical Manifesto May 3 08

Tagged:  •

Cnn.com has broken a story on the Evangelical Manifesto, a statement made by a host of evangelical leaders about the evangelical faith of the last several decades.

Keep you eye out for this when it releases in detail Wednesday. I will have more to say about it then.

Verhoeven Claim about Jesus is Old News April 24.08

Tagged:

The CNN release that Paul Verhoeven, the Hollywood director and Jesus Seminar participant, has written a biography of Jesus that attributes Jesus' birth to a rape of Mary by a Roman soldier is old news. In dealing with the theories of Jim Tabor in Dethroning Jesus (pp. 178-79) I wrote the following about this claim that goes back to Celsus and the late second century.

Interesting to See Reviews on Expelled April 18.08

Tagged:

I am watching the movie reviews of Expelled with interest. It is amazing to me how many negative reviewers are claiming the movie is for Creationism and/or that it attempts to refute Darwinism when that is not what the movie does or claims. The movie is about freedom of inquiry. It simply argues that Intelligent Design (ID) should be allowed to come to the table.

About EXPELLED, in Theaters Friday April 18 04.16.08

Tagged:  •    •

I do not usually promote a movie on this site, but this is an exception. EXPELLED, starring Ben Stein, is a look at how the issue of Origins is handled on many campuses and other academic settings today. I addressed this movie in a piece on NPR about 10 days ago.

James Ossuary and Other News April 14.08

The Israeli paper, Haaretz, has an updated report on the trial of the alleged founder of the James Ossuary. Those who wish to keep up with the progress of the trial over its authenticity can read about it at:

A Look at the Two Christian Faiths in Our Public Square: Christianity and Jesusanity April 1, 08

Tagged:  •

Although this is April Fool's day, the blog for today is not for fools. It is a look at the two kinds of Christianity that are out in the Public Square today: Christianity and what I call Jesusanity. The latter I have discussed before in Dethroning Jesus.

Galaxie Software for Logos: A Mac Guy Goes to the PC for a Program March 29.08

Tagged:  •

I have come on board, using Parallels on a Mac, to be able to access the Logos Libronix System. I am still getting up to speed with this, but I also have found Galaxie Software's The Theological Journal Library CD (Volumes 1-10). With Libronix you can search years of journals for information. The collection is theologically quite conservative.

Writing A Lot Now- A Short Note on the Gospel March 27.08

Tagged:

I am writing a lot now. Several individual articles are due between now and the end of the year. It has slowed down my blogging other than responding to comments. The first is an article on Discussing Christianity in a Non-Theocentric World. Here is a sample that discusses how we talk about the gospel in much preaching.

Dave Wrytzen on The Governor's Scandal March 18.08

My friend, Dave Wrytzen, pastor in Midlothian, Texas, sent me his remarks about the New York's governor's scandal. It was so good, I decided to reproduce it here. It says things very well. Enjoy.

Working on Some Key Issues March 15.08

Tagged:  •    •
I spent this last week at the University of Michigan, speaking to the staff and students of a church on campus, as well as lecturing on Luke in an Introduction to New Testament class and meeting with faculty and graduate students in their religious studies program. Gabriele Boccaccini was my host for the meetings on campus. He is well known for his work in Second Temple Judaism.

Hengel's Jesus Book and the Resurrection 03.10.08

Tagged:  •    •

Martin Hengel's new historical Jesus book, Jesus und das Judentum, concludes with a discussion of the witnesses to the resurrection. He begins with a careful walk through 1 Cor 15:3-8. He sees this confession Paul passed on as coming from the Jerusalem community, pointing to the eyewitness roots of the tradition.

Sorry to Have Been Away March 6

Well, we are into the heart of the semester and I leave for a 10 day trip that includes lectures at the University of Michigan on Luke and on Why the Humanities Must Respect the Bible, as well as plenary speaking at the ETS Southeastern regional. So I have been deep into preparation. Add to that a hard disk wipeout and I have been out of pocket.

Not Your Father's Religious Right Feb 27 08

One of the roles of this blog is to track trends. One of the more interesting ones is what is ahead for the religious right. A fascinating look at this comes from David Kuo, former deputy director of faith initiatives for the White House under George W. Bush. He has published a piece called Not Your Father's Religious Right. The link is:

Pew Foundation Stats There for Reflection Feb 25 08

The New York Times has published a story on shifting religious affiliation. It is an important look at movements in our culture.

Those who claim to be unaffiliated have experienced the greatest growth (7.3 to 16.1%). This means that many are leaving the realm of religious attachment altogether.

French President's Proposal on Holocaust Causes a Stir among Secularists Feb 18 08

Tagged:  •    •

With thanks to my colleague, Michael Burer, I note a story that France's President wants to keep the memory of the Holocaust alive by having each French child learn the story of one of 11,000 French Jewish children killed by the Nazis. His explanation is that they need to understand what the "absence of God" has done in the last century.

Jesus, Under 30s and the Church Feb 18 08

Tagged:  •    •

As I leave for a week of ministry including a lectureship in Atlanta, Ga., I came across an interesting analysis of under 30s that fits what I see when I am on the road (and that is about half the weekends fo the year). On Crosswalk.com, C. Michael Craven has discussed the current cultural "branding" of Christianity that leaves many younger evangelicals uncomfortable.

Gospel of Judas No. 5 What Did Judas Do? Feb 16 08

Tagged:  •

The fifth issue April DeConick raises is found in the Gospel of Judas 56.17-18. The alternate translations here are:

"You will exceed them all of them." (National Geographic Critical Edition)

or

"You will do worse than all of them." (April DeConick)

Interacting with Islam and Joint Christian-Islamic Statements Feb 9 08

Tagged:  •

Many may not be aware of a joint statement issued last winter between moderate Islamic leaders and many evagelicals. It was a first tentative step toward a call for dialogue. It produced some reaction in the evangelical community, showing just how sensitive living in a pluralistic religious global context can be.

New Roman Catholic Prayer over Jews Causes a Stir Feb 6 08 Updated Feb 8 08

Tagged:  •    •

Last summer Pope Benedict XVI promised to Jewish leaders to address the wording of a key prayer tied to Good Friday celebratiosn that was said to offend Jews. That new prayer has been announced. The fact that the prayer continues to ask for the salvation of Jews has led to Jewish leaders' reaction against the new version as not having done enough.

Gospel of Judas No. 4 Judas Not to Ascend to the Holy

Tagged:  •

The fourth error that DeConick points out has already produced agreement in the period after the original release. What the original National Geographic translation of 46.25-47.1 read as:

"They will curse your ascent to the holy [generation]"

now reads as:

"...You will not ascend to the holy [generation]" (DeConick)

He recently worte an editorial about how evengelicals are addressed in the public square and suggests that they may not be appreciated for what they are doing around the world.

The USA: A Christian Nation or A Nation Rooted in Judeo-Christian Values?

Tagged:  •    •

The Episcopal church has posted a fascinating commentary by Richard Hughes giving conservative Christians a hard time for claiming that our nation was founded as a Christian nation. Clarity on this point IS important. Our Constitution does endorse religious freedom, separation of church and state, and does not provide for a state religion.

It is a solid look at Jesus in the Second Temple Jewish context.
